Visualization Center C
Real data, made explorable for everyone
Storyvoxel supplies interactive exhibits to Visualization Center C in Norrköping, Sweden. The center is an unusual mix of research arena and public science centre, and it is also where Storyvoxel's own story began.
Opened in 2010, and built on a concept first sketched by professor Anders Ynnerman in 1999, the center fills several floors of restored 19th-century factory buildings. It has interactive exhibitions, a VR theatre, conference spaces, research labs, and one of the finest stereoscopic fulldome theatres in the world. Admission to the exhibitions is free, and the center has welcomed more than 1.5 million visitors.
The challenge
Visualization Center C serves a very broad audience. Researchers and professional visitors, families, the general public and school classes all share the same spaces. The exhibits need to work for all of them, without losing the scientific substance that sets the center apart.
The center's guiding philosophy, exploranation (exploration and explanation combined), sets a high bar. People should be able to investigate real data for themselves, not just look at pictures of it. Static images and expert-only tools don't meet that bar.
The solution
Storyvoxel has delivered more than 10 interactive exhibits to the center. Each one lets visitors explore real scientific data directly. On an interactive table, visitors can peel back the layers of the human body in 3D. They can also take a virtual journey inside an Egyptian mummy, exploring structure, detail and context at their own pace.
The relationship goes back a long way. Storyvoxel was spun off from the center's visualization environment, and today it is one of the center's suppliers. The two continue to develop research-based methods for visual learning and science communication together.
Turning scientific data into an immersive experience
The result
The exhibits give every kind of visitor, from school children to researchers, direct access to data that has actually been scanned, measured and observed. The same principle runs through the whole center: real data, made explorable, without reducing its complexity.
This grounding matters more as generative AI makes convincing imagery cheap and instant. Experiences built on real data carry a different kind of credibility. At Visualization Center C, visitors aren't looking at an approximation. They are exploring what is really there.
Turning scientific data into an immersive experience
There is something truly special in seeing Storyvoxel grow out of our own environment—born from the same curiosity, the same research foundation, and the same ambition to make complex knowledge accessible.
