Making advanced CT data explorable for wider audiences

Storyvoxel partnered with the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and its 3D Imaging Centre (3DIM) to make advanced CT data more accessible and explorable for a broader audience, spanning research, education, collaboration, and external engagement.

The 3D Imaging Centre at DTU is one of Europe’s most advanced laboratories for X‑ray and neutron imaging, providing state‑of‑the‑art CT facilities for research and industry collaboration. The partnership focuses on turning complex imaging data into interactive experiences that support understanding, communication, and shared exploration—without reducing complexity.

The challenge

Advanced CT imaging generates highly detailed and information‑rich datasets, but these are often difficult to communicate beyond specialist users. Static images, reports, or expert‑only tools limit access, making it harder to engage collaborators, students, partners, and visitors in meaningful dialogue around the data.

DTU’s 3D Imaging Centre wanted a way to open up access to real CT data directly in the lab environment—supporting demonstrations, collaboration, and communication with diverse audiences, while preserving scientific depth and fidelity.

The solution

Storyvoxel provided an interactive software setup designed to make data from the lab explorable. Complex CT datasets are transformed into immersive, easy‑to‑use interactive 3D experiences that can be explored directly, rather than explained indirectly.

To support shared, on‑site exploration, the installation includes a 65‑inch high‑performance touch table, provided by Storyvoxel and integrated into the lab environment. The large interactive display makes it possible for multiple users to explore the same dataset together, creating a common visual reference for discussion and collaboration.

Turning scientific data into an immersive experience

The result

By combining the advanced imaging capabilities of DTU’s 3D Imaging Centre with Storyvoxel’s intuitive interaction design, complex CT data becomes more approachable for a wider audience—without flattening or oversimplifying the underlying information.

The solution supports clearer communication across disciplines, stronger engagement with external partners, and more effective knowledge sharing in lab, education, and collaboration settings. It enables people with different levels of expertise to explore real imaging data together, building shared understanding grounded in what can be directly explored.

Turning scientific data into an immersive experience

With Storyvoxel, our 3D data comes to life - offering an open, immersive visualization experience that empowers viewers to explore and understand the material on their own terms.
