Exploring the human digestive system through real medical imaging

Storyvoxel delivered an interactive Inside Explorer installation for the exhibition “Microbiote” at Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie in Paris—the largest science museum in Europe. The exhibition explores the human digestive system and is inspired by the international bestseller Gut: The Inside Story of Our Body’s Most Underrated Organ by Giulia Enders.

The interactive installation allows visitors to explore the human body—and the digestive system in particular—using real medical imaging data presented through intuitive, touch‑based interaction.

The solution

Working together with French partner IMA Solutions, Storyvoxel delivered a customised 55‑inch Inside Explorer table featuring interactive content built on authentic 3D medical imaging data. The experience enables visitors to navigate the interior of the human body, moving between systems and layers through direct exploration rather than explanation.

The content is based on high‑resolution 3D X‑ray data, segmented to highlight different bodily systems, including the digestive, vascular, nervous, and lymphatic systems. This layered approach preserves scientific depth while making complex anatomy accessible to a broad public audience.

Deployment and reach

The installation forms an integral part of the “Microbiote” exhibition, marking Storyvoxel’s first Inside Explorer deployment in France. After its initial run in Paris, the exhibition is designed to tour internationally, bringing the interactive experience to multiple venues worldwide.

Key outcomes

  • Real medical imaging data made explorable in a public science museum

  • Intuitive interaction supporting understanding of complex biological systems

  • Authentic, layered visualisation of the human body without simplification

  • Scalable installation designed for international touring exhibitions
