Exploring sharks through real 3D imaging

Storyvoxel delivered a pioneering interactive experience for the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science in Miami, introducing a digital shark exhibit within the museum’s new aquarium. Using Inside Explorer, visitors can explore sharks and rays swimming in the adjacent tanks through interactive 3D X‑ray data—gaining insight into their anatomy and physiology from the inside out.

Research data made accessible for aquariums

Built on authentic 3D CT scans provided through collaboration with marine researchers, the installation allows visitors to virtually dissect, rotate, and explore shark anatomy using intuitive touch‑based interaction. The project demonstrates how real research data can be transformed into engaging public experiences and establishes a new model for interactive learning in aquariums worldwide.

Key outcomes

  • Real CT‑scanned marine anatomy made explorable for the public

  • Direct connection between live aquarium specimens and scientific imaging data

  • Intuitive, hands‑on exploration supporting learning across ages

  • New model for data‑driven public engagement in aquarium environments
